btw, i test all my work on a widescreen, and so have no idea what the icons look like on a normal screen, and so i imagine that they look like shite for any poor guy\girl that has such a device.

Kriegkopf, i wonder if you can make me some 'fortified' garrison Sprites?

Because I'm converting vanilla garrison troops into Festungstruppen - ( Don't know the english term, Defenders of heavy fortified strongpoints)

hallo sir, i\m not sure what you mean exactly? if you mean to make a fort... around a sprite, i could probably do that. Just send me the pallette files or whatever, and maybe an idea of what sort of fort.

However, I know nothing about making sprites, and i\m not sure if i want to? seems complicated and hard to do it well.

I have changed the garrison from Old man - police unit to well skilled defenders.
Like the soldieres of the Maginot Line or the defenders of Brest / Omaha Beach / Sewastopol / Leningrad e.g.
immobile but heavily fortified.


now i'm looking for sprites for them.

Sprites are nothing more than 8 -16 Bmp collected together, showing the phases of one animation.

Like a flipbook. The .spr could be done by me - or something other.

I like your buildings - so whould you try?


A firering Bunker or Trenchline, perhaps.

Soldiers on guard ( Stand.bmp - 1 Set of animation ) and being attackecd a firing bunker (one animation for every direction)?

Well, now that ive done some okay airfields, ones i like at least, i really wanted to tackle the port icon first thing, ive a few ideas on how to rework that one. Also, i want to help out with beta-testing p36---as soon as im done with my present game---a few days---as i want to play compendium\kriegkopf mods one more time before i install a clean Arma for p36.

So, what im saying is, i really like your idea for the gar... sprite, and i want to work on it----its just a matter of when? I do have some good pics of garrisoned forts. i think, maybe in a month or so i might have something decent for you to check out, in a perfect world. helmi_salut

Jaegerfeld, I had a look at a bmp for a dmp garrison sprite. It measures 1488x100, or 124x100 for each frame. With that size i can get alot of detail, but my concern is about sizing. In your opinion, how much of 124x100 should i test with, 50x50 or so? And is it best to center the fort in that 124x100space, or might it be better, as far as it showing on the map, if it was off, to the N, W, S, or E to some degree?

ps, this could turn out to be very cool, i think i can fit, say a pak, and a mg-gunner, even to the degree of tree branches waving in the wind.

Riko says his infantry sprites are approx 35 - 50 px high.
we can configure the position of sprite manually by the .spr file.
So i thinkpositioning the frames in the centre is the best way to test.

make one .bmp and i will do the .spr.

here are some rough samples, sizing and colouring, and fine details we can worry about further on. Do you like any of these?

A couple thoughts. One, when a cannon or rifle is firing, the area around the blast should lighten up some, or there should be reflections
this seems to me to be a difficult thing to do right, as the color differences are so slight, angles and shading can easily get lost, or other details can be blocked out entirely. At this point, I wont even go into how a grenade blast should|might work?

Two. When the garrison is being attacked, will the direction of the attack matter, ie., should the sprite always hold the same N-S position, or should its position change, according to which direction attack is coming from?

in the #2 sample, there is a soldier on roof about to throw a grenade. I see animating this soldiers movements as a GIANT headache! Arghh...

Three. How should the sequence of firing work? in a series of 12frames, 8, 4, or what? If thats unclear, should all twelve frames be different, slightly?
