3d models have many advantages, the most important is that everyone is using them.
You need 3D Tutorials:

Tuts for every 3D Graphics program.

Maybe this book will help you:

and fpr textures:

I don't know exactly what 3d-program paradox uses and also don't have eu3/rome to look up the file format but I can tell you about 3d-models in general.COBRA schrieb: im going to ask a question and hope someone knows the possible answere.
with some 3d games thay use skins lots of mapped parts aranged together.
and some maybe rendered or even another type of 3d .
do we know how hoi3 models are done.
if knot ill do what i can to model things and then figure it out ither when the game comes out or if the information is availible at a later date
There really are no "other types of 3d" but just some different ways to work (on) them.
You should look up the basic structure of a 3d model f.ex. on this wiki page . (This page is esp. for meshes but got some nice graphics/explanations.)
There are also different ways to paint/texture your 3d-model.
You could use an external 2d graphic file to lay over your 3d-structure which is the standard procedure afaik. This texture file may or may not be included in your final save-format. Some 3D programs however also allow to draw these textures directly in the program on the 3d-structure which practically is the same procedure without needing another 2d-program.
Another way is to just apply a color to different parts of the model which doesn't need a texture at all or let the engine decide how to paint the model based on some calculation.
You could also do something in between like f.ex. kkrieger which is a small 96k first person shooter just providing some basics and lets the engine do most the work (you'd need such an engine first).
No matter what way you use to create your model, you may allways need to render it for it's final purpose (depending on the definition you use for rendering) as this basically just means to put all the pieces together (shape-movement-colour/texture-calculations/effects). If you use lots of effects etc. this rendering could take lots of time f.ex. like you see in animation movies.
Models for games usually got most of the info allready included and just some simple effects are applyed by the engine (f.ec. DirectX effects).
This helps ease the need for calculating power while playing in realtime.
So if you want to do some models for the HoI3 engine, you should possible just use a conventional way of creating/saving a 3d-structure/mesh and texture seperately in some widely used format/program such as 3D-Studio-Max or Blender provide.
3d models however do require a lot of work even so once done you can use them any way you like (2d,3d,retexture etc.)
There are also some free-to-use models around and some (illegal) ways to extract them out of (game-)engines or secured file-formats.
As I've never been very deep into this subject, I hope to not have written too much bullshit...
If you got further questions, I'd advice to ask marco as he's been into the subject lately for the same reasons you're interested :guck: .

I wouldn't mind invading a small, defenseless country, installing a terror-regime... but you shouldn't...

If you look closely the airframe you will notice a small roundell on the center fuselage engine. Alot of bomber squadrons had some type of Aborigine type art on them to. Most of them had a white stripe towards the end of fuselage. Bad camo in the second pic bellow.

OK ROBERT---maxJaegerfeld schrieb: Very good, cobra.
I'm really impressed!
You are working with 3DS Max, right?
Could you convert one of your models into Autodesk FBX (should be possible at the save options/ maybe export?).
I'm experiencing with XNA ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_XNA ) at the moment.
One of the next things on my to-learn list is bringing in a 3Dmodel into my own game.
I will start with this in June/July.
ill do that in a few minutes and post it
and im not shure on the size you will have to let me know if it needs downsizing.
the fbx conversion i think gives some form of option to alter scale.
and if you need the template just ask

some Units are not online, because of Server Problems I have, will chance that.
Maybe Paradox will use an other fileformat for Hoi3 than EU3, we will see.
But I think it will not be a big thing to get the Models to run ingame.
